The film is produced by Legendary Pictures, where several members of the Kong: Skull Island team previously worked on Godzilla. Principal photography began on February 21, 2016, and continued at various locations around Hawaii. It wrapped on July 18, 2016. The film received a worldwide release by Warner Bros. Pictures and was released in the United States on March 10, 2017. It grossed $379 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics. In 1944 during World War II, a Japanese family leaves their home in Tokyo en route to Hawaii for vacation to escape air raids and remnants of the war. The family's possessions are collected by two American soldiers from the nearby Oahu Island Naval Base. During a search of their belongings, they find a map to an island that they believe is a secret Japanese military base in the South Pacific. They track down a nearby Japanese fisherman in a rowboat and convince him to take them to the island despite his warnings about an unknown monster inhabiting the island. In 2015, Colonel Preston Packard receives a distress call from archaeologists who find remains of an ancient civilization on an uncharted island in the South Pacific Ocean known as Skull Island. He flies there with Major Lucas Bennett and Special Agent 509 tried to fly off in an aerial surveillance plane which was shot down before it could complete its mission. Three days later, after parachuting into the jungle, they are attacked by a leshy. They are rescued by pilot Captain Samuel Trautman. Trautman tells Trautman that he was asked by President Dwight Eisenhower to investigate the matter. Trautman's team consists of pilot Hank Marlow; pilot-scientist Bill Randa; linguistics expert Rosie; medic Josh Serrano; trapper-musician Anderson Dawes; , who is the only survivor, the pilot of the downed plane, and two empty tanks who were told to stay behind. One month later, having found no trace of any monsters on the island, Trautman shares his findings with Colonel Packard and Special Agent 509. They are not convinced and inform Trautman that there have been sightings of a monster from the natives. After their discussion, Packard tells Trautman to prove to him that there are no monsters on the island. The team comes across a giant footprint in the ground. Marlow later finds three leshys guarding something behind a waterfall and gets trapped in a cave with them before being rescued by his teammates after they kill one of them, Curran. Later Curran's corpse begins to transform into a giant insect-like monster which Randa names "Skullcrawlers". The group is attacked by hundreds of Skullcrawlers and when they run out of ammunition, Trautman leads them through an underground passage.
